Secure Firearm Storage Built to BS 7558
Owning a firearm in the UK comes with a clear legal obligation: your guns and Section 1 ammunition must be stored securely to prevent unauthorised access. Your local firearms enquiry officer (FEO) will inspect your storage before granting or renewing your Firearm or Shotgun Certificate, and inadequate storage is one of the most common reasons for delayed licensing. Every gun safe in this category is designed to meet those expectations and keep your certificate in good standing.
The relevant British Standard for gun cabinets is BS 7558. It isn't a legal requirement, but cabinets tested to this standard are widely accepted by UK police forces as evidence of suitable construction. Withstanding a five minute attack with common burglary tools. The core features to look for are 2mm steel minimum, fully welded seams, internal lock mechanisms, anti-jemmy bars on the door frame, and solid fixing points so the cabinet can be bolted to brick or concrete. Most of our safes also include a separately lockable top compartment for ammunition, which Home Office guidance expects to be stored apart from the firearms themselves.
Choosing the right size is straightforward once you've thought about two things: how many guns you currently own, and how many you're likely to own in the next few years. Capacity headroom saves money long-term. Upgrading a cabinet because you've bought one more rifle is a common and avoidable expense. We stock 1, 2, 3, 5, 7, 10 and 14 gun cabinets, with extra-tall models for muzzle loaders and wider internal widths for scoped rifles. Our Shotgun & Rifle Safes section covers the main household range, while Ammunition Safes provides dedicated standalone cartridge and Section 1 ammunition storage.
Brand matters when it comes to firearms security. Brattonsound has been manufacturing gun safes in the UK since 1982 and remains the default choice for many firearms officers and dealers. Their Sentinel and Scoped Rifle ranges are built to BS 7558 and backed by a long warranty. Buffalo River offers excellent value in the mid-range, while Lokaway brings a distinctive shear-lock design with built-in ammunition compartments. You'll also find options from Browning and BSA across the range.
Fitting is as important as the cabinet itself. A gun safe should be bolted to a solid wall or floor, positioned out of plain sight, away from external doors and windows, and ideally in a room that isn't routinely accessed by visitors. Avoid garages, sheds and outbuildings unless significant additional security is in place.
If you're not sure which cabinet is right for your setup, give us a call or drop into the shop in Bromsgrove, we've been helping UK shooters through the licensing process for over 20 years and will happily walk you through the options.
Frequently Asked Questions
- Is there such a thing as a "police approved" gun safe?
Not officially. There's no national certification body or sticker that designates a gun safe as police approved in the UK. The phrase is commonly used but misleading. What actually matters is whether your storage meets the expectations of your local firearms enquiry officer, which in practice means a well-constructed steel cabinet (ideally built to BS 7558), properly fixed to a solid structure, and sensibly located within the property.
- What is BS 7558 and do I need a gun safe that meets it?
BS 7558 is the British Standard specifically for gun cabinets. Cabinets tested to BS 7558 must withstand a five-minute attack with common burglary tools. While it isn't legally mandated, BS 7558 compliance is the most reliable way to demonstrate that your storage meets the "reasonably practicable" security standard required under UK firearms law, and it's the benchmark most FEOs refer to.
- How should ammunition be stored?
Section 1 ammunition must be stored securely and separately from firearms. Most gun safes include a lockable top compartment for this purpose, which satisfies the requirement for small quantities. Larger stockpiles or separate calibres are often better handled with a dedicated ammunition safe. Shotgun cartridges don't legally need to be locked away, but many shooters choose to store them securely regardless.
- Where should I install my gun cabinet?
Your cabinet should be fixed to a solid brick or concrete wall or floor, positioned out of direct sight, and away from external doors and windows. Avoid garages, sheds and other outbuildings, your FEO is unlikely to accept these without significant additional security measures. A cupboard, under stairs space or spare bedroom corner is typically ideal.
- What size gun safe do I need?
Match the cabinet to your current collection plus reasonable headroom for future purchases. If you own two shotguns today, a 3 or 5 gun cabinet will give you room to grow without needing to upgrade. If you're storing scoped rifles, check the internal dimensions carefully. The cabinet needs to be tall and wide enough for the full length of the rifle with optics fitted.
